Over 25 years of design experience

Total Home Design was founded in 1999 by Matt Cholko, a Northern Virginia native with a lifelong background in home improvement and interior design. After initially focusing on remodeling, Matt’s wife, Ana, joined the company in 2015, transitioning it into a full-service interior design firm.

Today, we specialize in transforming everyday spaces into beautiful, functional environments. We create cohesive designs that reflect each client’s unique style, blending creativity with practicality. We believe design is a balance of art and science—where each detail is thoughtfully considered to achieve a harmonious, purposeful space.

Our process starts with understanding your vision, then carefully layering textures, colors, and furnishings to create integrated, visually striking rooms. Every design decision is rooted in functionality, flow, and style, creating a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and practical for everyday use.

In addition to furnishing and decorating, we manage full remodels to ensure that structural changes enhance the overall design. Whether reconfiguring layouts or installing custom cabinetry, we ensure seamless execution from start to finish.

Ana’s diverse background—growing up in the Croatian countryside, living in England and Ireland, and traveling throughout Europe and the Americas—brings a unique perspective to our designs. Her creativity and attention to detail, paired with Matt’s extensive experience in remodeling, result in spaces that are both visually captivating and perfectly tailored to each client.

Total Home Design has earned numerous accolades, including recognition as a Top Designer by Virginia Living Magazine, Northern Virginia Magazine, and Alexandria Living Magazine, as well as multiple Best of Houzz Awards. Our work has also been featured in Northern Virginia Magazine, further solidifying our reputation for excellence in interior design.

We look forward to collaborating with you on your next interior design project!

“Ana and Matt of Total Home Design are a pleasure to work with. They listened to our ideas and objectives and then presented options to achieve them. Ana brought multiple, fresh design ideas for consideration, including how they relate to existing styles, colors, and patterns in our home. Matt, his team, and related contractors brought competency and transparency to our projects. The team consulted on the design concepts, materials, and installation costs and then implemented our decisions. When issues came up, they were explained in detail, including options to resolve them. The possibilities included cost estimates (as best possible) and pros/cons so we could manage our project budgets while still working towards our objectives. We look forward to working with Ana and Matt on future projects.” — Art and Christina N.
